But behind the impressive before-and-after photographs and claims of up to 25% fat reduction, what does the science actually tell us?
Does fat freezing really work? Are the results permanent? And how do you know whether the technology being used is supported by credible clinical evidence?

Having worked with cryolipolysis, the medical term for fat freezing, since 2010, I have seen first-hand how the technology has evolved, from my early experience with CoolSculpting to the newer-generation systems available today.

At Dr Preema London Clinic in Mayfair, London, we now use Cristal Pro, developed by French medical technology manufacturer Deleo. My approach, however, has remained consistent: looking beyond the marketing claims to understand what the clinical evidence really tells us, what results patients can realistically expect and, most importantly, whether the treatment is right for them.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]
How Does Fat Freezing Actually Work?
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”8px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
The science behind fat freezing is surprisingly straightforward.

Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than many surrounding tissues. Cryolipolysis uses carefully controlled cooling to target these cells beneath the skin, triggering a process that causes some of them to die.

Over the following weeks and months, the body’s immune system gradually clears the affected cells. As a result, the treated fat layer may become thinner, creating a smoother, more defined contour.

Think of the stubborn pocket of fat around the lower abdomen that persists despite a healthy lifestyle. Fat freezing is designed to target precisely this type of localised concern.

It is important to understand, however, that fat freezing is a body contouring treatment, not a weight-loss solution. The aim is to refine shape rather than significantly change the number on the scales.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides useful guidance on cryolipolysis, explaining both the science and the potential limitations of non-invasive fat reduction.

Source: FDA – Non-Invasive Body Contouring Technologies
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Can Fat Freezing Really Reduce Fat by 20–25%?
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
This is probably one of the most interesting claims surrounding fat freezing, because the percentage sounds impressive but is rarely explained.

Clinical research does support measurable reductions in localised fat thickness following cryolipolysis. It does not mean losing 24% of your body fat or body weight.

There is also a qualification worth understanding. The Cristal investigation was small, manufacturer-sponsored and involved an earlier generation of the technology. It provides encouraging evidence, but its results should not be presented as a guaranteed outcome for every patient or every device.

For me, this is where clinical research becomes genuinely useful: not as a promise, but as a way of setting informed, realistic expectations.

Sources: DELEO – Cristal Clinical Investigation (2017) | Systematic Review of Cryolipolysis Outcomes (2025)
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”6px||10px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://drpreema.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/cristal-pro-fat-freezing-london.jpg” alt=”Cristal Pro fat freezing device screen and applicators at Dr Preema London Clinic for non surgical body contouring” title_text=”cristal pro fat freezing london” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” max_height=”480px” custom_padding=”||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”7px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Montserrat||||||||” header_2_font=”Prata||||||||” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”10px||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”10px||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Why We Now Use Cristal Pro
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Having worked with fat-freezing technology since 2010, including CoolSculpting, I have been able to follow its development over many years.

Our current system, Cristal Pro, represents a newer generation of cryolipolysis technology.

One of its practical advantages is the ability to treat up to four areas simultaneously, using different applicators designed for different body shapes and fat deposits.

This allows us to plan treatments around the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Deleo has also continued its clinical research, including an observational study evaluating Cristal Pro in real-world treatment settings.

It is important to distinguish this ongoing research from the earlier Cristal findings. Depending on the applicator, patients may initially experience suction, pressure and intense cold, followed by numbness as the area cools.

Some people find the initial sensation unusual, but discomfort often settles as treatment progresses.

Results are not immediate. The body needs time to process the affected fat cells, with changes generally developing over approximately eight to twelve weeks.

This gradual progression is worth remembering when looking at before-and-after photographs. The result is not created during the treatment itself; it develops as the body responds over time.

Some patients may benefit from additional sessions, depending on their starting point and the result they hope to achieve.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”6px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Montserrat||||||||” header_2_font=”Prata||||||||” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”10px||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”30px||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Is Fat Freezing Safe? Certain cold-sensitivity conditions, poor circulation and other medical factors may make cryolipolysis inappropriate.

Patients should understand both the expected benefits and the possible complications before proceeding.

Sources: FDA – Cryolipolysis Risks | PAH Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (2025)
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”||-30px||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”6px||||false|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Montserrat||||||||” header_2_font=”Prata||||||||” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”10px||||false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”30px||||false|false” custom_padding_phone=”0px||||false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
Who Is Fat Freezing Best Suited To?
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.14.2″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font=”Prata||||||||” inline_fonts=”Montserrat” global_colors_info=”{}”]
The patients who tend to be most suitable for fat freezing are those who are close to their preferred weight but have specific, pinchable areas of fat they would like to reduce.

Common concerns include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms and areas around the knees.

However, not every concern about body shape is caused by excess fat.

Sometimes what appears to be a stubborn bulge is influenced by skin laxity, reduced muscle tone or a combination of factors.

This distinction is important because removing fat will not necessarily improve loose skin, cellulite or muscle definition. In some cases, reducing underlying volume could even make existing laxity more noticeable.

At Dr Preema London Clinic, our approach is to assess what is actually contributing to the concern before recommending a treatment.

For some patients, that may be Cristal Pro. For others, a different approach involving muscle stimulation, skin tightening or improvements in skin quality may be more appropriate.

The objective is not simply to reduce fat, but to achieve a result that looks balanced and natural.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.14.2″
