My Supplement Journey: What I’ve Learned Over the Years
By Dr Preema Vig
I’m often asked about supplements — when to start them, what to take, and whether they really make a difference. My honest answer is that my own journey with supplements has evolved slowly over time, and I’ve learned far more along the way than I ever expected to.
I started taking supplements in my mid-twenties, when I was working long, demanding hospital shifts in the NHS. Anyone who has worked in healthcare will know how intense those years can be — long hours, unpredictable schedules, broken sleep and very little time to think about your own wellbeing. Back then, supplements weren’t something I analysed deeply. I simply wanted to stay well, keep my energy up and support my immune system. It was very much a preventative approach, rather than trying to fix a problem once it appeared.
Now, at 53, I’m fortunate to have good energy levels and I don’t get ill very often. I can’t attribute that to any single thing, but I do feel that the consistent, long-term support I’ve given my body has played a part.
Realising I Was Taking “Too Much of a Good Thing”
For many years, my supplement routine slowly grew. Like many people, I added things in as I went along — a recommendation here, something I’d read about there, products picked up online because they seemed reputable enough.
It wasn’t until I had my personal consultation with W-Wellness that I fully appreciated how much I was taking. At the time, it turned out I was on around 20 different supplements a day.
Despite my medical background, I hadn’t really had the time to sit down and look at:
● Which ingredients overlapped
● Whether some supplements were interacting with each other
● Whether I might be taking more than I actually needed
It was a gentle but important reminder that more isn’t always better — even when your intentions are good.
The Value of Proper Guidance
What I loved about working with W-Wellness was how reassuring the whole process felt.
Their nutritionists took the time to go through everything I was taking and explain it in a very clear, practical way. There was no judgement — just education. They helped me understand:
● What was genuinely supporting my health
● What might be unnecessary duplication
● Where quality and formulation really mattered
This is particularly important with supplements, as they are not regulated in the same way medications are. Two products can look very similar on the surface, but be completely different in terms of quality and absorption.
Simplifying My Routine
With their guidance, I changed several of my core supplements, including:
● Creatine
● Omega 3 Fish Oils
● Bone and joint support
● Glutathione
● Apple cider vinegar
Previously, I had been buying a mix of brands online, often simply because they were convenient. W-Wellness helped me switch to brands with proper clinical research and quality assurance behind them, which gave me far more confidence in what I was taking.
They also suggested:
● Nuchido Time, to support cellular health
● Introducing additional functional mushrooms alongside the Lion’s Mane I was already using
● Ancient + Brave Clarity, to support focus and mental clarity
Each recommendation was explained carefully, so I understood why it might be helpful for me.
Feeling Confident in My Choices
One of the biggest benefits for me was peace of mind.
I now feel confident that I’m taking supplements that:
● Are appropriate for me
● Work well together
● Are taken for the right reasons
This is something I see many patients struggle with. Supplements can feel overwhelming, and it’s very easy to end up taking things simply because they’re popular or heavily marketed.
Why I Encourage Trusted, Professional Advice
Because supplements are not tightly regulated, sourcing and guidance really matter. Working with a team like W-Wellness means you’re not navigating it alone. You have access to qualified nutritionists who can personalise advice and help you make informed decisions, rather than guessing.
My own experience reinforced something I strongly believe in — that good health is about thoughtful, consistent support, not extremes.
A Gentle Word of Advice
If I’m being completely honest, one of the biggest challenges with supplements is simply the sheer amount of choice. There are thousands of products available, endless opinions online, and very little regulation. Even as a doctor, I found it confusing at times — and I know many patients feel exactly the same way.
If you’re currently taking supplements, it can be helpful to pause and gently ask yourself:
● Do I really know why I’m taking each one?
● Do they all serve a clear purpose for me?
● Am I confident in their quality and how they work together?
Sometimes, simplifying — with the right guidance — can be far more effective than continually adding more.
For me, working with W-Wellness transformed supplements from something I was doing with good intentions into something far more considered, balanced and reassuring. Having access to qualified nutritionists who could look at the whole picture made all the difference.
If you’ve ever felt unsure, overwhelmed or simply curious about whether you’re taking the right things for the right reasons, a personalised consultation can be an invaluable starting point.
True wellbeing is rarely about adding more — it’s about understanding what your body genuinely needs and why.
